Ductwork Services
Ductwork design, installation and replacement for homes in Silver Spring, Bethesda and Washington, DC. Better airflow and comfort in every room.
Ductwork services from JC & JC HVAC Mechanical Contractors cover the design, installation and replacement of the duct systems that carry heated and cooled air through homes in Silver Spring, Bethesda, Washington, DC and the surrounding DC Metro area. If some rooms never feel right no matter what the thermostat says, reach out to our team and we will look at the air path, not just the equipment.
Your furnace, air conditioner or heat pump can only deliver comfort as well as the ducts let it. Undersized runs, crushed flex duct, missing returns and leaky joints quietly waste the capacity you paid for. Our ductwork team plans and builds duct systems for new equipment, additions, finished basements and homes where the existing layout simply never worked.
What do ductwork services include?
Ductwork services include designing a duct layout sized to your home's heating and cooling loads, then installing new ducts or replacing failing sections so every room gets the airflow it needs, quietly and efficiently.
We split the work into two related services so you only pay for what your home needs.
Ductwork Design
Ductwork design starts with a room-by-room load calculation and ends with a duct plan: trunk and branch sizes, register and return locations, and the static pressure your blower will see. Design matters most when you are replacing equipment, adding square footage, finishing a basement or chasing a long-standing comfort complaint. A good design is also where zoning decisions are made, so upstairs and downstairs can be controlled separately when that makes sense.
Ductwork Installation & Replacement
Ductwork installation and replacement puts that plan into metal and insulated flex. We replace rusted, crushed or disconnected runs, add returns where rooms are starved, seal joints with mastic, insulate ducts that pass through attics and crawlspaces, and balance the finished system so the airflow matches the design.
- New duct systems for homes adding central air for the first time
- Full or partial replacement of aging, leaky or damaged ducts
- Duct extensions for additions, finished basements and converted attics
- Return air upgrades for rooms that stay stuffy with the doors closed
- Zoning with motorized dampers for multi-level homes
- Sealing, insulation and airflow balancing after installation
Repair a section or replace the system?
Not every duct complaint calls for a full tear-out. When the main trunk is sound and the problem is a single crushed branch, a disconnected boot or one room without a return, a targeted repair is usually the right answer. Replacement makes more sense when the ducts are rusted through, when old fabric or tape joints have failed throughout the system, when the layout was never sized for central air, or when you are installing new equipment with a different airflow requirement than the old unit.
We look at the age and condition of the metal, the type of joints, how much of the system is accessible, and how far the measured airflow falls short of what the equipment needs. Then we lay out the options side by side so the decision is yours, not ours.
How do I know my ductwork is the problem?
Your ductwork is likely the problem when rooms stay hot or cold even though the equipment runs fine, when vents whistle or barely move air, or when new equipment did not fix the comfort complaint you replaced it for.
Duct problems tend to hide behind equipment symptoms. A system that short-cycles, runs constantly in July or ices its coil can be fighting high static pressure rather than failing on its own. Signs of a duct problem include:
- A second floor that runs noticeably warmer than the first all summer
- Bedrooms that feel stale or drafty only when the doors are shut
- Loud air rushing at the registers or a booming sound at startup
- Dust, condensation or sweating ducts in a humid basement or attic
- Energy bills that climb while comfort stays the same
- Sections of duct that are crushed, kinked, sagging or simply disconnected
Our humid summers make leaky ducts in unconditioned spaces especially costly. Warm, moist attic air pulled into a return, or cold supply air leaking into a crawlspace, adds load and can create condensation on the outside of the duct.
Is ductwork service the same as air duct cleaning?
No, ductwork service designs, builds and repairs the duct system itself, while air duct cleaning removes dust and debris from ducts that are already sound. They solve different problems, and we offer them as separate services.
If your ducts are well sized and intact but full of construction dust, pet hair or allergens, our air duct cleaning team is the right call. If the ducts are undersized, leaky, collapsed or laid out in a way that starves rooms of air, cleaning will not change how the house feels. That is a design and installation job. When we find both issues, we will tell you which one is actually behind the complaint and which one can wait.
Ductwork across Silver Spring, Bethesda and Washington, DC
We design and install ductwork throughout Montgomery County and the District, and the building stock shapes every job we take on.
In Silver Spring, a mid-century brick colonial, Cape Cod or split-level can have small trunk lines and few returns, especially if central air was added after construction. In Bethesda, larger new and rebuilt homes can run multiple systems or zones across finished basements, main floors and attics. In Washington, DC, rowhouses, condos and co-ops leave very little room for ducts, so routing through closets, soffits and chases takes careful planning.
Permit requirements depend on the scope of work and on whether the home is in Montgomery County or the District. As the licensed contractor, we pull the permits the job requires and meet the inspector.
Local utility programs can also affect the timing of a project. Pepco and the Maryland EmPOWER programs on the Montgomery County side, and the DC Sustainable Energy Utility in the District, run efficiency programs that may apply to duct sealing or system upgrades. Program terms change, so we recommend checking current eligibility before work begins, and we can point you to the right program for your address.
What to expect during your visit
Expect a walk-through of the whole air path, measurements at the equipment and registers, and a plain-language explanation of what is limiting your comfort before we recommend any design or installation work.
- Listen first: we ask which rooms bother you, when, and what has already been tried.
- Inspect: we look at the equipment, trunk lines, branches, returns and any ducts in attics, crawlspaces or basements.
- Measure: static pressure and airflow readings show whether the blower is being choked.
- Recommend: you get clear options, from targeted fixes to a full redesign, with the reasons behind each.
Small fixes include reconnecting a fallen branch or sealing a leaking boot. Larger redesigns and replacements are scheduled once you have chosen the option that fits your home and budget.
Our installation work is backed by our 1-Year Workmanship Warranty, and financing is available for larger duct projects.

Ductwork touches every other part of your comfort system, so it rarely stands alone.
Ductwork and equipment work best when they are planned together. If you are replacing a system, pair the new ducts with AC installation and replacement or heat pump installation and replacement so the equipment and ducts are sized for each other. For rooms where ducts truly cannot reach, a ductless system may be the better answer, and our team will tell you honestly which approach fits.
